Join us to give attention to the importance of occlusion.
Social media is a new world for all professions to see the innovations and share information. In our profession as dentists we are sharing and posting cases as pictures and videos. Occlusion and function in dentistry takes unfortunately less attention then it deserves. Younger generations try to learn from social media and they envy many dentists who are showing high aesthetic results. Aesthetics is surely very important but its time to start talking more about occlusion and function.
We can not define aesthetics and function separately and we believe in #occlusionmatters

Understanding or explaining the importance of ideal occlusion will be possible only when we follow biofunctional and holistic approaches as fundamental principles. Holistic approaches propose that a human should be examined and considered as a whole in diagnosis and treatment. The actual source or cause of any symptom in one part of the body actually may be in another part of the body that is related to another branch of medicine.
As an example, someone who constantly steps inwardly due to uneven force distribution over time may lead to a back problem or knee discomfort. In this case, the doctor will focus only on the discomfort and try to treat the patient’s knee or back problem. Well, this may be necessary but thanks to the holistic approach, the causative factor of the patient stepping inwardly may be detected. Thus, once the imbalance is eliminated, the discomfort might even diminish by itself over time or if it has to be treated, recurrence might be prevented.
The dentists, who are experts in their subjects and have this point of view, adopt and accept that occlusion is one of the balancing organ of the body and it is a complex mechanism that is associated with any part of the body. How does the ideal chewing system work in the design of human biological entity? The concept of bio-functional occlusion is based on the principle of detecting all the factors in our chewing system accurately, observing and evaluating the whole chewing mechanism together with all surrounding tissues.
– The ideal position of the joints, muscles, teeth and even the whole body posture,
– Stable orthopedic position of the temporomandibular joint (jaw joint),
– Accurately determined occlusion (closure of teeth) and natural non-worn ideal tooth forms, should be based on.
These elements are responsible for the long-term functional health of the chewing system. Physiological function, comfortable chewing, longevity and aesthetic appearance depend on the biological form and shape of these tissues.
What should we understand by aesthetics-although it is not the primary purpose-? Actually, a healthy and functional chewing system provides automatically an aesthetic appearance. This point of view separates the bio-functional approach from the dental procedures, which have only cosmetic purposes. Because; aesthetics and function, form and function cannot be defined separately.
If aesthetic treatments; are performed by disregarding the function, we may have an approach on aesthetic concept only as “decoration” and it would be a huge mistake.
Bio-functional dentistry has a purpose to create a stable chewing system, which has a long-term and natural beauty, in most proper way.
Ideal chewing system depends on the existence of ideal occlusion in preferred position where several wear and deformation are minimized by means of the minimal forces on muscles, teeth and TMJ, even on the skeletal system.
A disturbed occlusion may present with many symptoms that may reduce the quality of life, adding the fact that people can miraculously adapt to these disorders. However, ability of adaptation has limits that may vary from person to person.
Scientific studies and researches are full of contradictory interpretations on this subject. There are numerous of articles and scientific publications state that occlusion is important in some cases but in many other; it is not important at all.
Beyond the perceptions and science of our time, the human existence is what we have not yet fully comprehended. The concepts and the complex and mystical structure of human body, which we cannot fully explain today, may become more of an issue and reach significance only when we have multidisciplinary holistic approaches, stripped of the dogmas changing day by day.
